The Sandbox Witch -- A Children's Poem

There once was a house among trees
With a garden and a soft breeze,
And a sandbox beside it ,
With tree shadows stretching over the pit.
In this sandbox there lived a witch
Hidden by shadows black as pitch.
She scared the house’s children
And made the sandbox seem very barren.
The house’s children stayed away
And chose other places to play,
The three boys said “I’m not scared”
Still, them going to the sandbox was rare.
The little daughter of the house
Crept over, quiet as a mouse,
Though afraid to meet the witch,
She had left her doll in the sandbox ditch.
She made it halfway, but no more;
The witch was there to make her sore.
So she turned and ran away,
So her mother could make it all okay.
Her mother took her by the hand,
Said “Why won’t you play in the sand?”
So the little daughter told
About the witch and shivered as though cold.
“Shall we go and see?” asked her mom,
When they did the girl was quite stunned.
There was no sandbox witch here;
She was made only by shadows and fear.
